Midyear Check-In: AI Search Now Dominates How Customers Find Local Businesses

Halfway through 2026, the AI search shift is no longer a prediction — it’s the default. Here’s where things stand and what to do.

At the start of the year, “AI is changing search” was a forecast. At the midyear mark, it’s just how search works. Google’s AI Mode has passed a billion monthly users, and industry tracking now puts AI-generated answers in the majority of local service searches — up from a small fraction just two years ago. If a customer looks for what you do, odds are an AI writes the first thing they see.

The number that matters: searches that never click

Roughly two out of three searches now end without a click on any website. The customer asks, the AI answers, done. That sounds like bad news for local businesses — and for invisible ones, it is. But there’s a flip side: studies find that businesses actually cited inside the AI answer see notably *higher* click-through and better-qualified visitors than plain organic listings. The traffic didn’t disappear; it concentrated on the businesses the AI trusts.

Why this favors prepared small businesses

AI answers aren’t assembled from backlink empires — they lean on clarity and credibility signals: a complete Google Business Profile, steady recent reviews, and real pages that plainly answer real questions. A well-run local business can earn a citation that a bigger, sloppier competitor misses. This is one of the few times the playing field has tilted *toward* small operators who do the fundamentals well.

Your midyear checklist

  • Audit your Google Business Profile — every field filled: services, areas, hours, photos, description. AI systems use it to verify you’re legitimate and active.
  • Keep reviews fresh. A strong rating from 2024 with nothing recent reads as stale — to customers and to the AI.
  • Publish answer-shaped pages. One clear page per service, written the way customers actually ask, beats one vague “Services” page.
  • Check how you appear in AI answers. Ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode the questions your customers ask, and see if you’re mentioned — that’s your new page one.
